The play-based curriculum approach, including Music, Art, Spanish and Physical Education programs, encompasses the Harcourt and Learning Without Tears curriculums. The students are guided to use appropriate language to communicate effectively and positively in the classroom and the world at large. WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL!
Swordfish Class
Dear Students and Parents,
Welcome back to school Swordfish students! We trust you had an enjoyable holiday and are ready to begin a year that will be exciting and fun. Parental involvement is encouraged throughout the year to include volunteering to read, assisting with field trips, cooking, and art projects. Ask about the many ways that you can volunteer.
COMMUNICATION BOOK
Your child will bring home a PARENT-TEACHER COMMUNICATION BOOK. It should come to school every day. We will write about activities happening at school and other reminders. You should check the book daily and sign it. Likewise, the book is for you to write in as well.
ARRIVAL PROMPTNESS
Please be reminded that Morning Meeting starts at 8:50am and at least ten minutes are recommended for settling in prior to the start of the day. This year we will be carefully monitoring punctuality and will be charging a $20 late fee to parents who are habitually tardy in the morning and afternoon. If you arrive early, outside play is until 8:30am, at which time the teacher will escort the children up to the classroom. If you arrive after 8:30am, missing the morning line-up, it is considered late and you will be charged $20. After 8:30am please escort your child up to the classroom and make your late payment. You can avoid a morning late fee if, for instance, you have a Doctor’s appointment at 9:00am and then bring your child to school during outdoor play time from 10:30am – 10:50am, while all of the children and their teachers are on the play yard.
PICK UP TIME
The prompt midday collection time is 12:30, if you arrive after 1:00 it is considered late. The prompt full day collection time is 3:00, if you arrive after 3:15 it is considered late. The late fee is due immediately. Your children and their teachers appreciate the effort so that precious cognitive functioning hours are not wasted, unnecessary interruptions are prevented, and teachers can move on to other family obligations after the school day.
Your child will need to bring to school every day:
* Back Pack large enough to hold artwork and a lunch box.
* Lunch Box with a nutritious morning snack, drinks, and a healthy lunch.
Friday dismissal is at 12:30 for all students. Teachers are engaged in Curriculum Meetings each Friday afternoon.
SPECIAL ACTIVITIES & DAYS
The SPORTS lesson will be on Tuesday each week. Athletic (tennis) shoes are recommended for all day. Girls should wear shorts.
The MUSIC lesson will be weekly, on Wednesday.
NEWSTIME presentations will begin next week. See the schedule to note your child’s dates.
SHOW & TELL is each week on Friday. The children need to remember the topic or type of item in an effort to be responsible.
COOKING & STORYTIME sign-up sheets are on the bulletin board to the left as you enter the door. It is a really fun way for parents to participate at school.
HOMEWORK will be given in a few weeks. The assignments will be written in the Parent-Teacher Communication Book. Please sign it upon completion.
LIBRARY time will be weekly, on Tuesday. Your child will choose a book from our shelves to enjoy at home. Fostering responsibility, the book is to be returned the following Tuesday.
OFF DAYS
If your child will be missing any school please let us know in advance so that we can prepare some work to take away that has been taught previously. When your child returns to school he will be expected to complete missed work at home. Some tutoring may be needed to cover the missed concepts.
CLOTHES
Please send a change of clothes to be kept at school to include a school shirt, pants, and underwear. Remember to label all clothes, bags, and belongings. Be sure to include a toothbrush and small toothpaste to keep at school.
HYGIENIC ITEMS
We thank you for assisting and supporting our hygienic efforts by providing a box of tissues, container of wipes, and hand sanitizer to be used by the children at school. Restocking of these items, with each new term, is appreciated.
MEDICAL
Please be reminded to provide us with any contact or medical up-dates on your child’s existing file.
As always, we make ourselves available if you have any questions or concerns. The telephone number at school is 325-3795, and you can send email to me at schoolhousenassau@gmailcom. We look forward to getting to know you and your child this year.
Sincerely yours,
Ms. Andra, Ms. Helen, and Ms. Kara

CURRICULUM SYNOPSIS
Kindergarten
The Little Schoolhouse
The Kindergarten classroom approach is interactive and hands-on. It is a stress-free, enjoyable learning environment in which the children thrive.
The Reading, Language, Comprehension, Phonics, Spelling, Science and Math lessons are anchored in the Harcourt curriculum.
In addition to Harcourt, we are experiencing great success with the Leanring Without Tears curriculum approach for accurate letter formation, grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure and creative writing prompts. The students are taught to use appropriate language to communicate effectively and positively as we strive to develop socially and academically sound individuals. The children are encouraged to develop proper handwriting skills through the lessons presented. LWT aims to reinforce legible and fluent handwriting, a skill that students can easily master when in this program.
A natural extension of the LWT program is the highly anticipated twice-weekly Sentence School lesson. These specific lessons use a multisensory approach to provide a quick, active lesson to sharpen handwriting accuracy, practice and internalize sentence structure, reinforce correct grammatical usage, build vocabulary and creative expression.
The Harcourt Math program is a balanced mathematics curriculum that promotes conceptual, computational and problem-solving proficiency. It provides a consistent 4-step method that includes intervention, family support, assessment and use of technology. This ensures that we use a variety of strategies and activities to reach all students.
The Science program is also part of the Harcourt curriculum offering. Effective science integrates many opportunities to develop reading, writing, and math skills while learning about the world around us. It also features hands-on investigative opportunities as a child’s sense of exploration is nurtured. In addition, a weekly Health & Fitness lesson is a valuable integration of physical sports education, health science and social moray learning.
One of the most popular and confidence-boosting aspects of each week in the Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2 classroom is the Shared Reading program. The “big kids” read to the younger children fostering a sense of community and bolstering reading confidence and ability.
The students enjoy the RAZ-KIDS online reading benchmark program. Each student gains comprehension and fluency in reading. Students are encouraged to use the RAZ-KIDS program at home for increased practice and a way to keep a strong home to school connection involving their parents.
In our best effort to provide a well-rounded curriculum, our students also participate in the following weekly activities: Literature, Sports and Swimming, Music and Drama, Sign language, Social Studies, Spanish, and Cooking.
