WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL!
Sharks Class.
Dear Students and Parents,
Welcome back to school Sharks students! We trust you had an enjoyable holiday and are ready to begin a year that will be exciting and fun. Parental involvement is encouraged throughout the year to include volunteering to read, assisting with field trips, cooking, and art projects. Ask about the many ways that you can volunteer.
COMMUNICATION BOOK
Your child will bring home a PARENT-TEACHER COMMUNICATION BOOK. It should come to school every day. We will write about activities happening at school and other reminders. You should check the book daily and sign it. Likewise, the book is for you to write in as well.
ARRIVAL PROMPTNESS
Please be reminded that Morning Meeting starts at 8:50am and at least ten minutes are recommended for settling in prior to the start of the day. This year we will be carefully monitoring punctuality and will be charging a $20 late fee to parents who are habitually tardy in the morning and afternoon. If you arrive early, outside play is until 8:30am, at which time the teacher will escort the children up to the classroom. If you arrive after 8:30am, missing the morning line-up, it is considered late and you will be charged $20. After 8:30am please escort your child up to the classroom and make your late payment. You can avoid a morning late fee if, for instance, you have a Doctor’s appointment at 9:00am and then bring your child to school during outdoor play time from 10:30am – 10:50am, while all of the children and their teachers are on the play yard.
PICK UP TIME
The prompt midday collection time is 12:30, if you arrive after 1:00 it is considered late. The prompt full day collection time is 3:00, if you arrive after 3:15 it is considered late. The late fee is due immediately. Your children and their teachers appreciate the effort so that precious cognitive functioning hours are not wasted, unnecessary interruptions are prevented, and teachers can move on to other family obligations after the school day.
Your child will need to bring to school every day:
* Back Pack large enough to hold artwork and a lunch box.
* Lunch Box with a nutritious morning snack, drinks, and a healthy lunch.
Friday dismissal is at 12:30 for all students. Teachers are engaged in Curriculum Meetings each Friday afternoon.
SPECIAL ACTIVITIES & DAYS
The SPORTS lesson will be on Tuesday each week. Athletic (tennis) shoes are recommended for all day. Girls should wear shorts.
The MUSIC lesson will be weekly, on Wednesday.
NEWSTIME presentations will begin next week. See the schedule to note your child’s dates.
SHOW & TELL is each week on Friday. The children need to remember the topic or type of item in an effort to be responsible.
COOKING & STORYTIME sign-up sheets are on the bulletin board to the left as you enter the door. It is a really fun way for parents to participate at school.
HOMEWORK will be given in a few weeks. The assignments will be written in the Parent-Teacher Communication Book. Please sign it upon completion.
LIBRARY time will be weekly, on Tuesday. Your child will choose a book from our shelves to enjoy at home. Fostering responsibility, the book is to be returned the following Tuesday.
OFF DAYS
If your child will be missing any school please let us know in advance so that we can prepare some work to take away that has been taught previously. When your child returns to school he will be expected to complete missed work at home. Some tutoring may be needed to cover the missed concepts.
CLOTHES
Please send a change of clothes to be kept at school to include a school shirt, pants, and underwear. Remember to label all clothes, bags, and belongings. Be sure to include a toothbrush and small toothpaste to keep at school.
HYGIENIC ITEMS
We thank you for assisting and supporting our hygienic efforts by providing a box of tissues, container of wipes, and hand sanitizer to be used by the children at school. Restocking of these items, with each new term, is appreciated.
MEDICAL
Please be reminded to provide us with any contact or medical up-dates on your child’s existing file.
As always, we make ourselves available if you have any questions or concerns. The telephone number at school is 325-3795, and you can send email to me at schoolhousenassau@gmailcom. We look forward to getting to know you and your child this year.
Sincerely yours,
Ms. Andra, Ms. Helen, and Ms. Kara
Sharks Curriculum
Our four-year-old students are developing language, social-emotional, cognitive, literary, and motor skills at a rapid pace. Each student has an individual learning style that we are increasingly aware of and able to teach to. The teacher-to-student ratio is excellent and our classroom space is enriched with an abundance of age-appropriate curriculum resources. It is with great pride that we engage and support our students and their parents in the learning process as we set the foundation for a lifetime of positive learning experiences.
The curriculum at The Little Schoolhouse for the 4-year-old class is play-based and theme oriented. It is a compilation of curriculum that has been developed by the teachers at The Little Schoolhouse.
Every week the focus is on a specific theme, letter, number, shape and value. Math and language activities are planned relating to the theme with a multi-sensory, hands-on approach that encourages the child’s sense of exploration and discovery.
In addition to creative applications of appropriate curriculum we include Handwriting Without Tears. This is a dynamic and interactive handwriting program that starts with small motor skills and facilitates posture, pencil grip and accurate letter formation through a series of multi-sensory skills. This reading and writing readiness program has a fantastic rate of success and achievement.
All activities including Sports, Music, Spanish and Science are developmentally appropriate.
Children are guided to respond positively in social situations by using encouraging words and self-control. We are attentive to children as they gain social confidence by assisting them to use kind words in sharing situations
Various approaches to learning are used to keep the students learning and interested. As an example, for a Space theme, we might make a moonscape using flour and salt dough, and then cut and paste planets on to a construction paper solar system.
At other times we sing songs, read stories, use visual displays and puppets to enhance and facilitate our literacy skills.
Children and teachers alike enjoy learning in the four-year-old Sharks classroom at The Little Schoolhouse. It is a positive and caring environment, an ideal beginning for a lifetime of learning.
